Whitewater Rafting In Arizona: Arizona Rafting by Wilderness Aware

There are many things that are synonymous with Arizona;  deserts, cacti and the Grand Canyon are among the few items on the list that you might think of. Which, as we all know, makes sense. But Arizona is also heavily invested in building unique outdoor experiences for residents (and non-residents). It’s also a prime spot for thrill seekers to go whitewater rafting, where several of their rivers provide optimal conditions for the summer activity.

Arizona Rafting by Wilderness Aware knew the potential that the rivers held. It’s why they began utilizing their combined knowledge to offer guided trips along the Salt River. With years of experience in Colorado, it made sense to open up outposts in Arizona.

Though the location of the river is more remote than most (its located on the White Mountain Apache Reservation) the trip is worth it to see the wild landscape. Being completely separated from the bustle of even a small town is oftentimes a rejuvenating moment of peace. And this outfitter uses that, plus their phenomenal services to keep people coming to the river.

 Who They Are

Whitewater Rafting In Arizona: Arizona Rafting by Wilderness AwareArizona Rafting is a professional and experienced rafting company that has a passion for the outdoors. Their love for the river and canyon is their driving force for providing quality tours. For almost 30 years, owners Joe & Sue Greiner have pushed the envelope to make every trip memorable, first by logging in thousands of miles of guiding experience on rivers around the world.

Then they brought their knowledge and energy, passing it down to their team. They wanted everyone to foster a sense of pride to far exceed their customer’s expectations. And did exactly what they set out to do.

When you book a trip with them, you’ll get top-quality rafting and camping gear, depending on how long you plan your trip for. You’ll find clean and private clothes changing facilities that are off the ground, and weather tight kitchen facilities to use. These kitchens use propane powered refrigeration as well as food-grade stainless steel preparation tables.

Full day trip-goers will have the chance to chow down on a spread of fajita lunch options. Guests can expect to feel well-rested and ready to tackle their trip with no problem. Multi-day trips also offer bathroom accommodations and chairs. You won’t have to totally “rough it” in nature, especially on days when the weather isn’t exactly ideal. Arizona Rafting continues to take their services up a notch, making for a memorable, secure and safe summer activity.

The Salt River

Whitewater Rafting In Arizona: Arizona Rafting by Wilderness AwareThe Salt River offers exciting rapids as well as smoother, slower moving waters. It’s naming convention isn’t a coincident either. The river does contain quite a bit of salt but starts from the fresh water of the Gila River. Then it eventually flows into the Salt River Tributary once it leaves the Arizona White Mountains.

The Tamarisk (Salt Cedar) is mostly to blame for the river containing so much salt. The tree is found lining the Arizona Salt River from beginning to end. It’s not native to the land and was introduced initially as a way to prevent the topsoil from blowing away off the farms of the region. Over time, however, the trees pulled salt from their soil and stored them in their leaves. Leaves would fall, spreading the salt mostly in the river.

The Salt River flows for over 200 miles and sits at an elevation of 11,400 ft. There are a number of fish species that inhabit the river and plenty of wildlife to view from all sections of the river. Most of the river is calmer than others with Class II-Class IV rapids. Depending on your skill level, you’ll only hit one type of rapids.
