The town is surrounded by almost two million acres of national forests and hosts the access point to Highway 149. This route takes you on a 75-mile scenic and historic byway through the “Silver Thread Country” including the historic towns of Lake City and Creede.

Be sure to visit Chimney Rock Archaeological Area, where you can travel back in time as you enjoy a guided historical tour of ancestral Pueblo ruins. Venture into the scenic San Juan Mountains to view any of the 25 spectacular waterfalls. A few suggestions include taking a hike and picnicking on top of the world in the beautiful San Juan National Forest. Or take a fascinating ride on North America’s longest and highest narrow-gauge steam railroad—Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. A short side trip will take you to Mesa Verde, home to the cliff dwellings of the Anasazi. Bring your camera! Nearby Navajo State Park offers recreation for the entire family with camping, fishing, boating, hiking and nature walks.
